Bulletin EDUPAX no 10
Juin-juillet
2005

2. L’AMA affronte un
puissant lobby d’abuseurs d’enfants en Californie. L’Association médicale américaine exige l’étiquetage des jeux vidéo.
Labeling of Video Game Content. Many
video games are not appropriate for children, encouraging violence, aggression
and deviate activities; the video gaming industry has failed to police itself
and accurately reflect those videos that are more appropriate for mature
audiences in their current self-chosen rating system. A bill addressing this
problem recently failed to receive enough votes in the California State
Legislature due to aggressive lobbying by the video gaming industry. The bill,
which was strongly supported by the California Psychiatric Association, will be
brought back to the Legislature this legislative session by the author. The
American Medical Association will actively campaign so that these videos will
be made available for purchase by adults only. The AMA supports all other
appropriate measures to address and reduce television, cable television, and
motion picture violence. Texte intégral de

4. Les dépenses militaires mondiales en
augmentation constante. Mille milliards de
dollars.
humains. http://web.amnesty.org/report2005/index-fra
6. Le commerce des armes en
hausse. Selling
Weapons to the World. The United
States has taken a leading role in the $1 trillion global weapons industry,
selling to both sides in regional conflicts, and to regimes that its own State
Department has declared abusive. http://www.newsdesk.org/archives/000205.php

"When
was the last time you felt this comfortable in a relationship?" -- An ad
for sneakers. "You can love it without getting your heart broken." --
An ad for a car. "Until I find a real man, I'll settle for a real
smoke." -- A woman in a cigarette ad. Many advertisements these days make
us feel as if we have an intimate, even passionate relationship with a product.
But as Jean Kilbourne points out in this fascinating and shocking exposé, the
dreamlike promise of advertising always leaves us hungry for more. We can never
be satisfied, because the products we love cannot love us back. Drawing upon
her knowledge of psychology, media, and women's issues, Kilbourne offers
nothing less than a new understanding of a ubiquitous phenomenon in our culture.
The average American is exposed to over 3,000 advertisements a day and watches
three years' worth of television ads over the course of a lifetime. Kilbourne
paints a gripping portrait of how this barrage of advertising drastically
affects young people, especially girls, by offering false promises of
rebellion, connection, and control. She also offers a surprising analysis of
the way advertising creates and then feeds an addictive mentality that often
continues throughout adulthood. http://www.jeankilbourne.com/CantBuy/index.html
9. L’article

« Smokes still get in
children’s eyes. Major tobacco companies agreed to stop
pushing for their products to be promoted in the arts from 1998, the number of
tobacco brand appearances in U.S. films aimed at children has not fallen
significantly," according to a report published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association. The percentage of "films aimed at children
showing tobacco brand names, or trademarks" fell slightly from 15 to 12,
after 1998. Yet, in the ongoing federal racketeering trial against major
tobacco companies, industry lawyers claimed companies have
"voluntarily" adopted tough advertising restrictions. A Brown &
Williamson Tobacco Company lawyer "suggested that the companies had
stopped advertising in magazines with youth readerships of more than 15 percent
or more than two million," reported the New York Times. Government witness
and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids president Matthew Myers disputed the claim,
pointing out recent ads in Sports Illustrated.» http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4556765.stm
11. L’éducation
aux médias pour prévenir le crime ? Mokhiber
and Weissman co-authored "On the Rampage: Corporate Predators and the
Destruction of Democracy”. They found out that big corporations dump big money
into public health groups, and pretty soon, the groups start taking the line of
the big corporations. We understand why we are losing the wars on cancer, heart
disease and diabetes. We face the same problem with medialiteracy groups. Some
of them get funding from big media to take blame away from the media for
intoxicating kids and teens. Most media education material in Canada and in the
U.S. (sometimes schools receive free kits) get funding from big media. The
funding "naturally" helps put the blame on parents, just like the
food industry funding helps put the blame for diabetes and obesity on the lack
of exercise. And big media corporations are very powerful. They know how to
protect their image. What would happen if medialiteracy could grow free from
the big media. Dr. Sut Jhally, from the
Media Education Foundation, declared: «Media
literacy is so dangerous to media corporations that they have moved to hijack
the movement as it builds momentum. » Could
medialiteracy help prevent youth crime ? http://www.edupax.org/Assets/divers/documentation/1_articles/Taking%20Lessons%20From%20Littleton.htm
American Diabetes Association makes a sweet deal with Cadbury et Schweppes. If
you are wondering why Americans are losing the wars on cancer, heart disease
and diabetes, you might look at the funding sources of the major public health
groups. Big corporations dump big money into these groups. And pretty soon, the
groups start taking the line of the big corporations. Case in point: the
American Diabetes Association (ADA). Earlier this month, the ADA cut a deal
with candy and soda pop maker Cadbury Schweppes. Here's the deal - Cadbury
Schweppes kicks in a couple million dollars to the ADA. In return, the company
gets to use the ADA label on its diet drinks - plus the positive publicity
generated by the deal. Cadbury makes Dr. Pepper and such nutritious treats as
Cadbury's Cream Egg. You would have to have your head buried deeply in the sand
to deny that sugar-filled soda is fueling childhood obesity - which in turn in
is fueling type 2 diabetes." In an interview with the Corporate Crime
Reporter, ADA's Richard Kahn emphasized that the ADA logo would only appear on
"products better to eat." http://lists.essential.org/pipermail/corp-focus/2005/000204.html
13.
Cultivation
Theory of Mass Media. A summary of a theory suggesting that repeated exposure
to definitions of potentially fictional or biased 'reality' in the mass media
leads to perception of the 'reality' as normal. The result is a social
legitimisation of the 'reality' depicted in the mass media, which can influence
individual behaviour. http://www.comminit.com/changetheories/ctheories/changetheories-24.html
états-uniens. http://fr.news.yahoo.com/050525/202/4fnfa.html
15. Deep Throat
Henry
Porter visits the States three or four times a year, and watching the
television news in hotel rooms in the last three years has been like “witnessing
a time-lapse study of emasculation," he writes. Porter is the London
editor of Vanity Fair magazine, in his ruminations about the unmasking of FBI
official Mark Felt as "Deep Throat," the Watergate whistleblower.
“It's not just the unbearable lightness of purpose in most news shows; it's the
sense that everyone is rather too mindful of the
backstairs influence of the White House in companies such as Viacom and News
Corporation that own the TV news," Porter writes, adding, "The result
of this climate of fear and caution is that few
Americans have any idea of the circumstances in which 1,600 of their countrymen
have lost their lives in Iraq, the hideous injuries suffered by both Iraqi and
American victims of suicide bombers, or even the profound responsibility that
lies with Rumsfeld for mishandling practically every facet of the occupation.
The mission to explain has been replaced by the mission to avoid. If today
there
was a whistleblower as well-placed, heroically brave and strategic as Mark
Felt, one wonders whether he would now find the outlet that Felt did at the
Washington Post between 1972 and 1974." The rest of this story : http://www.prwatch.org/node/3782

U.S. Sabotaged Nuke Meet, Critics Say. The Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty 2005 Review Conference ended here in failure May 27.
Many countries, nongovernmental groups and peace activists said a successful
outcome, which would have advanced global nuclear disarmament, was blocked by
the Bush administration. Some countries have abused the rules of consensus to
effectively exercise veto power over the review. Former U.S. Ambassador Thomas
Graham Jr. of the Global Policy Institute said the U.S. had failed to fulfill
commitments it made when the NPT was adopted in 1995. There have been failures
in the past, but this failure appears to be at this stage the most acute
failure in the history of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review
conference process, he said. Chris Cooper of Abolition Now, which co-sponsored
the mass May 1 antinuclear demonstrations here, said, I would be willing to say
the United States basically sabotaged the conference. It became clear that they
were not serious about strengthening the nonproliferation regime. Most
non-nuclear nations criticize nuclear weapons states, mainly the U.S., for
focusing on nonproliferation but not keeping their side of the agreement by
dismantling their huge nuclear arsenals. Smaller, developing states say they
feel threatened by this one-sided U.S. posture.
The U.S. push on counter-proliferation, say many states, is trampling on their
right to use nuclear energy for peaceful development, guaranteed by the NPT.
The calls for the abolition of nuclear weapons are now irreversible, the group
said. Cooper of Abolition Now said the U.S. sabotage of the nonproliferation
review has completely re-energized the nuclear abolition movement, especially
in Europe and the Middle East. http://pww.org/article/view/7188

internationale. L’arroseur arrosé. International
Community Strategy in the U.S. World After 9/11. The
tectonic events of the past three years — including September 11 and the U.S.
war on terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond — have dramatically affected
the world and attitudes toward the International Community. However, some of
the dynamics that are influencing the environment in the U.S. and the world are
also the product of trends that have been at work for many decades. The
continuation of these trends will make management of the security environment
in the world more difficult in years to come and could increase the demands on
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY political and other resources. Consequently, it is
important to develop a shaping strategy toward the U.S. that will help to
ameliorate the conditions that produce religious and political extremism and
anti-INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY (and anti-OTHER) attitudes. The Canadian Centres
for Teaching Peace (“CCTP”) undertook to take a recent Rand Corporation study
done for the U.S. Air Force on a U.S. Strategy in the Muslim World and turn it
around to see how it would apply to the U.S., and gauge the resulting
reactions. CCTP thanks the Rand Corporation. View the print-friendly

Science Under Siège. The
American Civil Liberties Union has issued a new report which charges that the Bush
administration is using the war on terror as a pretext to tighten restrictions
on information. It states that the administration "has sought to impose
growing restrictions on the free flow of scientific information, unreasonable
barriers on the use of scientific materials and increased monitoring of and
restrictions on foreign university students. ... The government is seeking to
graft the values of security agencies - secrecy, control and confinement of
information - onto the world of science, where information must be
uncontrolled, open to all and distributed as broadly as possible. http://www.aclu.org/Privacy/Privacy.cfm?ID=18445&c=39

La malbouffe gagne des points. The junk food lobby wins again.
Recently, Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell vetoed "what would have been the
nation's strongest school-based nutrition law," writes Michelle Simon.
"With one stroke of the pen, she put to rest an extremely contentious three-year
battle to rid Connecticut schools of soda and junk food. Similar scenarios are
being played out in state capitals all over the nation, where high-paid
lobbyists of multi-national corporations such as Coca-Cola are swooping in to
foil the efforts of local nutrition advocates, educators. With rising rates of
childhood obesity and diabetes, state legislatures have become a major
battleground over the sale of junk food in public schools." http://www.alternet.org/envirohealth/22259/

Les lobbyistes inondent Washington. Lobbying is a thriving business
these days. The number of registered lobbyists in Washington has more than
doubled since 2000 and "amount that lobbyists charge their new clients has
increased by as much as 100 percent," the Washington Post reports.
"The lobbying boom has been caused by three factors, experts say: rapid
growth in government, Republican control of both the White House and Congress,
and wide acceptance among corporations that they need to hire professional
lobbyists to secure their share of federal benefits." According to the
Washington Post, political historians see this as a problem for U.S. democracy.
"The growth of lobbying makes even worse than it is already the balance
between those with resources and those without resources," Allan Cigler
told the Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/21/AR2005062101632.html

taxpayers' expense. If you liked the fake government news videos that ended up
on local stations - or thrilled to the 'journalism' of Armstrong Williams and
other columnists who were covertly paid to promote administration policies -
you'll love the brave new world this crowd envisions for public TV and

42. Sondages utilisés pour endormir. This
spring, a poll that found half of adult Americans have frequent sleeping
problems was reported on "by virtually all of the country's major
newspapers and television networks," as well as international media.
"Lost in the somber warnings and survey results, however, was that the
poll, the proclamations and the press kits that spread the information were
paid for by sleeping pill manufacturers," reports the Sacramento Bee.
Although the group that released the poll, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF),
receives more than half of its income from drug companies, only 17 of 84
newspaper stories "mentioned the foundation's pharmaceutical
sponsors." And while the New York public relations firm Zeno Group was
touting the NSF poll, it was also hyping the launch of a new sleeping pill,
Lunesta. Zeno Group included "a pitch for coverage of the release of the
Lunesta sleeping pill" in the NSF press packets announcing the poll
results. http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/medical/story/13132325p-13976434c.html

Human Rights and the US/UK Illegal Attack On IRAQ. The testimonies have brought
the reality of an Iraq tortured by the US/UK (and a coalition of willing
clients) illegal attack, and illegal occupation, into our minds and
hearts. With a sense of deep anger at the continued aggression and deep
compassion with the victims we have witnessed the reality of crimes against
peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including nuclear war through
the use of depleted, radioactive uranium, on top of the genocidal economic
sanctions. » More from TRANSCEND: A Peace and Development Network. www.transcend.org

Big Media's
Ties To Corporate America. Mainstream media is the term often used to describe
the collective group of big TV, radio and newspapers in the United States.
However, mainstream media no longer produce news for the mainstream population
- nor should we consider the media as plural. Instead it is more accurate to
speak of big media in the US today as the corporate media and to use the term
in the singular tense - as it refers to the singular monolithic top-down power
structure of self-interested news giants. Only 118 people comprise the
membership on the boards of director of the ten big media giants These
individuals sit on the corporate boards of 288 national and international
corporations." http://www.mediachannel.org/views/dissector/affalert400.shtml
